Pregnancy Reflexology
£75.00
Reflexology is a complimentary holistic therapy using human touch and interaction to enhance well-being and induce a deep state of relaxation, soothing the mind and the body. It is safe for most people and non-invasive.
Presently the research into reflexology is limited and it is uncertain how it actually works, but its relaxation, pain killing, and nerve blocking effects are well documented. It can be stimulating as well as relaxing.
What is Reflexology?
There are two main theories on how reflexology works. The first is that the parasympathetic nervous system (which is responsible for the body’s rest and digest system and maintains the body’s normal functions in a state of calm) is being positively stimulated. The second theory is that it works along the same principles as Chinese medicine where reflexology is stimulating and re-balancing the body’s energy pathways.
Reflexologists believe that certain areas of the feet, hand and ears are connected to specific areas of the body. By ‘working over’ all of the areas on the feet, the reflexologist is gently stimulating the systems and organs of the body, which encourages the body’s natural healing and balance.
Is Reflexology safe in pregnancy?
Pregnancy reflexology can be beneficial during the 2nd and 3rd trimester, and also the 4th trimester (postnatal), providing there are no medical contraindications present. It is especially important during the consultations that you share your medical and pregnancy history or complications prior to any treatment.
Benefits of reflexology during pregnancy?
Reflexology is very relaxing and can help with anxiety and stress related symptoms. Most women sleep well following a treatment and many report a sense of well-being. Some women also report feeling energised following treatments. Reflexology allows women to take time out of their busy schedule and lives to focus on themselves and their baby whilst preparing them for birthing.
Reflexology can also be used during pregnancy, labour, and the postnatal period to help with:
- General relaxation
- Backache, sciatica, pelvic girdle pain
- Nausea
- Fatigue/ increase energy levels
- Insomnia and sleep issues
- Birth preparation
- Encouraging release of endorphins within the body
For inducing labour?
The application of pressure to certain reflex points on the feet may stimulate contractions and may be of benefit to avoid induction of labour after 37 weeks of pregnancy. Always consult with your midwife or Doctor if you have any concerns.
